The Eagle of the Ninth by Rosemary Sutcliff! I think this is definitely one of the more chill reads of the year, and I’m thankful for it.
The story starts with Centurion Marcus Acquilis at his new station in Britain. The hook was nice and quick yet not right out of the beginning. The pacing throughout the book was relatively decent with just a slight yet story-important lull after the beginning. The “lull” was a great opportunity for world building a Sutcliff introduced some enjoyable characters during it.
Eagle of the Ninth was fairly short and there wasn’t much to it. A simple, easy to follow story line with some action and nice themes. There isn’t really anything to complain about, and if there IS, then it wasn’t memorable enough to me. I really enjoyed the vibe of Roman meets Britton and liked seeing the exploration of the English countryside, and I will for sure be reading Sutcliff’s next installment in the series.
One thing I am very satisfied with, was the happy ending… I haven’t had one of those in a LONG time. Thanks, Red Rising 😭
I would recommend this book to almost anyone of the fantasy, history, and historical-fiction genres as a nice little snack and give it 7.25/10 🥞
